Hugh McMenamin and his Descendants

Since May 2005 I have discovered seven (with recent additions, this is now eight) generations of my family, this has not been straightforward, since even today people can't spell McMenamin.   In the late nineteenth century when many Irishmen and Irishwomen did not read or write in English, the result was many variations of our name in English speaking countries.

If you know anything that is not listed here please contact me with details.

Generation 01

Hugh McMenamin, my Great Great Great Grandfather, married Ann McMenamin.  They were probably born around 1810 in Ireland and had both passed away by 19 November 1893.  All I know at this stage is that Hugh and Ann had at least one child.

Generation 02

John McMenamin (son of Hugh and Ann) was born in c1835 in Ireland.  In c1855 he married Mary-Anne Gallan.  John and Mary-Anne had at least one child.  By 1864 Mary-Anne had died because John, as a widower, married Mary McMenamin.  Mary (daughter of Hugh and Grace (Donnelly)) was born in c1844 in Ireland.  They married on 21 November 1864 at St. Patrick's Church in the parish of Aghyaran (Termonamongam) near Castlederg, Co. Tyrone.  According to the register John and Mary were both employed as servants.  John was from the townland of Castlegore in the parish of Urney, and Mary was from the townland of Carnoughter in the parish of Termonamongam, both townlands are in West Tyrone.  Their marriage was witnessed by Sarah McMenamin.  I have no idea who this was, and whether Sarah belonged to the paternal or maternal side of the McMenamin family tree.  John and Mary left Ireland in 1872/73 for Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  They appear as John and Mary "McMenemy" on the Census for Scotland 1881 at Cameron's Land.  At this time John was recorded as being employed as a labourer.  What brought them to Bridge of Weir?  There is another McMenamin family nearby, James and Grace (Dunn) McMenomy but I cannot find any evidence that they are related.  Also John appears on a death certificate for Jessie McMenomy, again no evidence of being related.  However there is a McMenamin/Donachie link between James and Jessie; and James is a name that appears several times in our family tree so it is very hard to ignore.  By 1891 John and Mary "McMenamin" appear at 17 Logie Street in Govan with John employed as a railway surfaceman.  John died at this address on 19 November 1893 and Mary died on 7 January 1895 at 80 John Street in Govan.  John and Mary had at least ten children.

Generation 03

Anne J. McMenamin (daughter of John and Mary-Anne) was born in c1861 in Ireland.  In 1881 Anne, employed as a mill worker, also resided at Cameron's Land.  Anne therefore left for Scotland with John and her step-mother Mary.  On 17 August 1883 Anne married John O'Donnell at St. Fillan's in Houston, Renfrewshire.  On 16 August 1937 Anne died in Bridge of Weir.  This register confirms that she married John O'Donnell, and also that she had a son-in-law I Garry, and therefore by implication she had a daughter.

Generation 04

Anne married a John O'Donnell in Houston, and had children.  More details to follow.

Hugh McMenamin, son of Mary, was born about 1865 in Ireland.  In 1881 he was employed as a general labourer.  Hugh lived at 339 South Wellington Street in Glasgow, Lanarkshire when he married Mary Catherine McDaid of 40 ?????? Street in Johnstone, Renfrewshire on 05 November 1886 at St. Margaret's in Johnstone.  Mary, the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Lafferty or Haggerty) McDaid, was born about 1866 in Johnstone.

Generation 04

Hugh, had several children, but only daughter Mary survived into adulthood. Hugh and his family emigrated to San Francisco. More details to follow.

James McMenamin, son of Mary, was born about 1871 in Ireland.  In 1891 he was employed as a shipyard labourer.  James married Elizabeth Ross McMillan, of 1 Marr Street Govan, on 28 December 1894 at St. Anthony's in Govan.  Elizabeth was born about 1877 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire.  In 1901 James and Elizabeth lived at 5 Grace Drive in Govan.  James was employed as a ship keeper.  James and Elizabeth had at least six children.

Generation 04

John-James McMenamin was born on 12 August 1896 at 40 Harmony Row in Govan.

Duncan William McMillan McMenamin was born on 10 February 1898 at 5 Grace Drive in Govan.

Hugh McMenamin was born on 13 December 1899 at 5 Grace Drive in Govan.

Elizabeth Ross McMillan McMenamin was born on 21 November 1901 at 9 Grace Drive in Govan.

Catherine Edgar McMenamin was born on 21 July 1903 at 31 Helen Street in Govan.  Not sure where the name Edgar has come from, at the time of Catherine's birth James and Elizabeth lived at 27 Helen Street.  Did the Edgar's live at 31?

Christina McMillan McMenamin was born on 25 May 1906 at 28 Kinning Street in Tradeston, Glasgow.

Andrew McMenamin, son of Mary, was born about 1872 in Ireland.  In 1891 he was also employed as a shipyard labourer.  Andrew died on 13 May 1892 at 17 Logie Street in Govan, aged 20 years.

Edward McMenomy, son of John and Mary, was born 15 April 1873 at Cameron's Land in Bridge of Weir.  He died 24 February 1916 at 77 Greenfield Street in Govan.  In 1891 he was employed as a labourer.  It is not clear from the documentation what type of labourer.  Edward married Annie Laverty in St. Anthony's on 28 August 1897.  Annie was born about 1876 in Ireland, daughter of John and Mary Jane, and died on 8 December 1939 apparently in the same house in Govan.  According to the death certificate aged 58 years.  This is out-of-step with other documents available which suggest Annie was a few years older, perhaps aged 63 years.  In 1901 Edward and Annie lived at 35 Greenfield Street in Govan.  Edward was employed as a wood working machinist for the rest of his days.  I believe Edward and Ann ie had nine children, all born in Govan.
